Guinea Pig Care

Guinea pigs make friendly petsGuinea Pigs are another favourite children's pet. They are friendly and come in a variety of colours and fur types. Guinea pigs frequently live to over 6 years of age if well looked after.

Guinea pigs come from South America. Female guinea pigs only have one or two babies at a time and the babies look just like miniature adults.

Housing and Bedding
Guinea pigs may be kept outside in the summer but ideally should be kept inside in the winter. You must make sure that their outside hutch area away from any drafts and raised a bit from the ground. Also make sure that it is very secure and safe from cats. It is best not to keep the hutch is prolonged direct sunlight and guinea pigs can quite easily get sunstroke.

Guinea pigs are sociable creatures and you can successfully keep several housed together. Be careful to choose guinea pigs of the same sex if you do not want them to breed. It is better not to keep rabbits and guinea pigs in the same hutch as their food requirements are different.

As with rabbits, give them some hay for bedding material and make sure that their hutch is cleaned thoroughly several times a week.

Feeding
Guinea pigs can be fed on prepared commercial extruded food to ensure a well balanced diet. treats of fresh vegetables may be given in small quantities. Alway keep a good supply of fresh water on hand for your guinea pig.
Remember to clean their food and water bowls daily.
