Why insure your pets
Today more than ever, people are appreciating the benefits of pet health insurance. Pet insurance covers veterinary fees when accidents, injuries or illnesses strike, often without warning. In addition most pet insurance policies provide cover for such legal liability, otherwise known as third party insurance, which can run to several million pounds. These days it is better to be safe than sorry.
Veterinary surgeons recommend insurance for pets because it allows them to do the best for their patients without their clients having to worry whether treatment costs can be afforded.
Just as in human medicine, veterinary medicine has made great advances in the treatment of sick animals. However new developments in diagnostic techniques, surgery, medicines and intensive care come at a cost and there is no ''NHS'' for pets. Serious accidents and disease can often result in long and very often expensive treatment. Pet insurance will allow your pet to have the best possible care and treatment when he or she needs it most.
Various types of cover
Some policies will cover a particular condition for only one year and others for the lifetime of your pet. Policies vary enormously in price too- there are policies to suit most budgets.
Exclusions and excesses
Pet health insurance does not usually cover the costs of vaccinations, neutering and for claims associated with pre-existing illnesses. Most policies carry an excess; in some cases this is a set amount and in others in may by 10% of the cost of the treatment.
If you do decide to change insurance companies
Please read the small print of any policy very carefully before deciding to change
insurance companies. Most companies will not cover any illness, injury or other medical problem which you pet has had prior to the start of the new policy.
