Senior Pet Care

What do we mean by a ‘Senior Pet’?
Cats and dogs over the age of 7 is considered to be entering their senior years senior pet. They may not appear to be aging, but we should begin to take extra care of them.

What can you do to help your Senior Pet?
Diet: As your pet gets older their nutritional needs change. It is a good idea to move him or her  onto a ‘senior’ diet. These diets are often a bit easier on the kidneys and liver and are better balanced for the aging pet. We do recommend the Purina Pro Plan Senior diets.

Weight control: Equally as important as nutrition for the older pet is weight control.  Being even a little overweight can put a greater strain on important organs such as the heart, liver and lungs and on joints too. Plump pets are more prone to developing diabetes too.

Regular health checks: Regular health checks are essential for the senior pet. We recommend twice yearly checkups to ensure that health problems are quickly identified and treated . You may wish to attend our free nurses’ senior pet clinics with your pet as well. Don’t forget to keep up-to-date with vaccinations and worming too!

Home comforts: Older pets still benefit from regular and frequent exercise just as we do. In the colder weather they may appreciate a warm soft bed in a cosy corner free from draughts. Don't forget to make sure that plenty of fresh water is available for your pets at all times.
