Please start by phoning your regular veterinary surgery in case it is still open.
  • After the normal surgery hours, you may be transferred directly through to the Emergency Service @ ChesterGates Referral Hospital.

Phone Advice
  • You may telephone for advice and this is free of charge. The staff at ChesterGates Referral Hospital are always happy to help. 
  • However do remember that there is very little that we can do over the phone and we are relying on the information which you give us about your pet's condition.
  • This is not a substitute for bringing your sick or injured pet to the hospital.
 
My Pet Needs to be Seen by the Vet
ChesterGates Referral Hospital
  •  If your pet needs emergency treatment, you must make your way with your pet to ChesterGates Referral Hospital. 
  • If possible give the staff a good idea of when you will be setting off and/or arriving and your address so that the  emergency staff can be ready and waiting for you when you arrive.
  • Your pet will be examined as soon as you have registered at reception.
  • Any required treatment will then be started immediately.
 
Why is it Better to Take my Pet to the Hospital

  • The Emergency Service @ ChesterGates Referral Hospital operates rather like A&E at a human hospital.
  • All the necessary staff, equipment and medicines to treat your pet are at hand
  • Please remember that here is very little that can be done for your pet at home.
  • We will always give you advice on how to move your injured or sick injured pet.
  • House calls will only be made if the veterinary surgeon on duty decides that it is the sick or injured animal’s best interest.
  • Seriously ill or injured animals may need to be admitted to the hospital for further treatment and care.
 
What Happens after Discharge from ChesterGates Referral Hospital
  • We will contact your usual vet when your pet has been treated at ChesterGates Referral Hospital and fax or email your pet’s medical records so that your usual veterinary surgeon can carry out any further treatment as required. 
  • We always recommend that you take your pet to your own veterinary surgery for a check up as soon as possible after discharge from ChesterGates Referral Hospital.
 
Fees
  • As you will understand, the fees  for out of hours veterinary treatment are somewhat higher that which you may expect to pay during normal working hours. 
  • Please ask for a detailed estimate will be given to you if your pet needs to be hospitalised at ChesterGates Referral Hospital for further tests and/or treatment.
  • You  may be asked to leave a deposit for any treatment which your pet will receive in the hospital. 
  • Payment may be made by either cash or credit/debit cards and is made directly to ChesterGates Referral Hospital - not to your usual veterinary surgery. 
  • If you have pet insurance this may cover the emergency service fees. Please have your policy documents with you if you wish to use your pet insurance.
  • For those who are eligible, the RSPCA and thePDSA offer a voucher scheme to help with the cost. You must apply directly to the RSPCA or the PDSA for this. 
  • In all cases payment is due in full and in accordance with our terms when treatment is finished.
